Salmon forecast mixed

It’s a good news / bad news salmon forecast this year.

The Somass River sockeye run remains closed with only 169,000, down from a high of 2 million fish just 5 years ago.

Local DFO fisheries manager Michael Spence says a large blob of warm water in the mid-Pacific is thought to be to blame

While the sockeye fishery remains closed, a strong Chinook run is forecast for this year.

Spence says they’re currently forecasting a return of 91,000 chinook, and the local coho run is also expected to be strong.

He credited the Robertson Creek Hatchery and other enhancement efforts for the ever-improving chinook and coho returns.
