Port Alberni is now home to another large fish processing ship.
Independant Seafoods Canada who owns the Raw Spirit bought an even larger ship in Denmark, and unveiled it yesterday.
The 185-foot Sunderoey will start seas trials today, and will start fishing with a full crew next month.
Owner Kelly Andersen says fishing is good offshore, and seafood markets are strong for quality products caught at sea.
“Traditionally you just catch the fish and bring it in, now, what we do is we process them on the ship which adds jobs, and we also add value to the product,” he said.
Andersen says fish heads, entrails and bones, which are normally thrown overboard, are now cooked on the ship and made into a high value fish meal used in aquaculture and other industries.
The new ship will add another 50 local jobs to the company, who will now have 130 local people working in seafood processing at sea.
