Fire investigators have traced the source of last week’s fire at the San Groups re-manufacturing mill to a spark from a welder.
Port Alberni Fire Chief Mike Owen said the fire started near the Stamp Avenue end of the building, which is consistent with what fire crews saw when they first arrived.
“They were welding brackets on to the wall that were going to carry the cable trays,” he said. “It appears that after that activity is when the fire occurred.”
Port Alberni fire crews responded to 12 calls this weekend, including thick smoke from a kitchen incident on Cameron Drive on Saturday, and a pick-up truck on fire Sunday on River Road at Beaver Creek Road.
