Port Alberni RCMP say they haven’t noticed an increase in domestic violence calls, but the executive director of the women’s services centre believes incidents are on the rise.
Ellen Frood says many women are trapped and isolated because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The current call for us all to stay home creates prime conditions for abuse,” she said. “Now, someone is pretty much trapped in the house and can’t leave and that’s the frightening thing. Women shouldn’t have to choose between dealing with violence and safety issues as related to COVID-19.”
Frood says the transition houses remain a safe place for women seeking shelter.
The Alberni Community and Women’s Centre has also launched a text-based service for women to reach out if it’s unsafe to make a phone call. Woman can text 250-206-1011 if it’s unsafe to talk. Frood said the number is constantly monitored.
