CMHA to take over City Park Caretaker programs

The City has reached a deal with the Canadian Mental Health Association to staff caretaker homes at local parks.

The 6 small houses are often empty, and CMHA Board Chair Todd Patola said the new arrangement benefits the city and some CMHA clients.

“The general purpose of having residents at the park houses is keeping an eye on the park, and also providing caretaker services for the washrooms in the immediate vicinity of the park house,” he said. “As well we’ll provide an organizational back-up to those people.”

Patola said the CMHA can provide appropriate people for the roles and an administrative structure to support them.

Currently there are two unoccupied caretaker houses, and if other caretakers move, the CMHA will fill those posts as well.

Previously, the city charged minimal rent to the caretakers in exchange for their services. Now the city will collect property taxes on the homes from the CMHA.
