Fifteen years after a massive community engagement process completed, the city is dusting off an old report to guage progress over the years.
Dozens of people were part of Outlook 2020 meetings back in 2004 and 2005, and now that 2020 is here, Mayor Sharie Minions said the city is finally catching up with what the people of Port Alberni want.
“There’s quite a consistency in the direction they wanted to see the community going then, and the direction that we’re trying to go now,” she said. “There may not have been a lot of progress made along the way, but it’s reassuring to know those conversations have been happening and there’s been this desire for positive improvements to our community for so long. I’m personally excited to see them start happening as we make progress on many of these initiatives.”
Minions said work towards a composting program and welcome sign were issues in 2005 and remain so today.
She said the current council is also working on the quay to quay path which was also identified as a priority project in the Outlook 2020 report.
