City taxpayers will be covering the cost of two destructive youths, who smashed out the windows of heritage train cars and set off fire extinguishers and tore up the seats.
While the pair did own up to the crimes and returned to clean up their mess, the Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Society still had to replace the windows on the city-owned rail cars, at cost of $9072.
Mayor Minions said the amount is less than their insurance deductable or possible legal costs
“It shouldn’t be for the city taxpayers to pay but unfortunately it’s probably not worth the legal costs for $9000 and to recoup those costs elsewhere,” she said. “I think we have to just look at the positive side, and try to get that asset back on the rails and move forward.”
Minions said one of the boys donated his allowance for a few months, and she hopes the two at least learned their lessons.
Pete Geddes from the Industrial Heritage Society said $3000 raised through crowdfunding will go towards fixing the seats.
