Ice could be back in a week

City staff are awaiting the green light this morning, to turn on the ice-chiller and begin the week-long process of restoring the ice surface in the multiplex after a 3-week shutdown.

City CAO Tim Pley said the manufacturer of the Isotherm machine was on a red-eye flight back to Texas last night, and they’re hopeful the final documents can be sent to Technical Safety BC this morning.

“Technical Safety BC has required that the manufacturer provide some documentation,” he said. “We’re hopeful that the documentation is provided quickly today and that Technical Safety BC receives it, processes that, and lifts the order, so it’s a matter of process at this point it appears.”

Pley said he’s cautiously optimistic they’ll be able to re-start the ice-chiller today, but warned some of the requirements from technical safety might not be easily achieved.

He said one of the requirements is that the city install a system monitoring program, which is already in the works.

Pley praised city staff for their work on the project, and offered an apology for the negative affect on user groups, but said they did not anticipate such problems from a brand-new piece of equipment.
