Mayor Sharie Minions said her experience as a Port Alberni council member helped shape her approach to this year’s Union of BC Municipalities convention.
The annual convention brings together municipal and regional leaders from throughout the province to network, discuss issues of mutual concern, and meet with provincial Ministers and their staff.
Minions said she learned from being a part of previous council that meetings need to be targetted and specific, with just one ask, and one person representing the group.
She said council’s approach this year seemed to have worked
“So this year, rather than all seven of us piling into each meeting with a Minister, we took one councillor into each meeting and went with one specific ask, and one specific project that we wanted to talk about,” she said. “In years past we’ve all gone to those meetings and we often brought conflicting messages and we haven’t found it to be very effective … I feel very strongly that we’re going to hear some really positive news from a couple of the meetings we had.”
Minions said she’s expecting some announcements will be coming out of their UBCM meetings soon, but there are no specifics yet.
