No one was injured yesterday when an excavator went into the new sewage lagoon and sunk up to the cab.
Wilf Taekema, the city’s Director of Engineering and Public Works said the operator was clearing vegetation from the edge of the sewage pond project when the machine suddenly sunk.
“We’ve got this long-stick hoe that’s been clearing the lines in the pond, so it just kind of sunk down and got stuck,” he said. “It’s not like it fell in or anything, he was actually walking it around out there, feeling his way around with the bucket when he hit a soft spot.”
The new sewage ponds are not operational yet, so only held muddy water, and a small boat was sent out to rescue the operator.
A bulldozer pulled the machine out of the mud and it will be inspected for damage today.
