City Bylaw Officers were out late last Sunday, ticketting garbage cans illegally put out the night before collection.
Many people who received those tickets were at city hall on Tuesday, complaining to council that they should have received warnings before being hit with a hundred-dollar fine.
City CAO Tim Pley said the city has been actively educating the community on being bear aware, and has given a blanket warning that fines were coming.
Mayor Sharie Minions said the city warned residents through social media and notices in utility bills, that fines would be coming.
Minions said people asked the council to make improvements to the city through bylaw enforcement, and they are doing that.
She said responsible garbage collection is part of Port Alberni’s designation of being a Bear Aware community.
Pley said many people who received a ticket have already paid them, and there will not be an appeal process.
