The theft of a large banner has sparked online battles, as people continue to argue about the cancellation of the Thunder in the Valley drag races.
Earlier this week, members of the Alberni Valley Drag Racing Association hoisted their race banner onto the poles by the rail tracks on Johnston Road, with the word “Denied” across the dates.
AVDRA member Roger Haggerty says the banner was hung partly as political protest against the ACRD’s reversal of a decision to allow the races to return to the airport this year, but also to let people know it’s been cancelled this year.
Haggerty said people reported a large white contractor cube van at the poles, and saw two men putting a ladder back on the truck.
A reward is being offered for the banner’s return.
Haggerty said Drag Racers will begin circulating a petition at tonight’s Alberni Valley Street Rods Show & Shine at the Harbour Quay.
