Police hunt continues for two Alberni teens

Canada-wide warrants have been issued for two Port Alberni teenagers who have sparked a manhunt, now that they’ve been charged in the death of a man near Dease Lake.

The R-C-M-P says 18-year-old Bryer Schmegelsky and his longtime friend, 19-year-old Kam McLeod, have been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Leonard Dyck of Vancouver, who was a professor of botany at UBC.

The two are also suspects in the deaths of Australian Lucas Fowler and his American girlfriend Chynna Deese, whose bodies were found four days earlier on July 15th along the side of a highway in northeastern B-C.

The fathers of the two teens are reacting quite differently to the case, as Alan Schmegelsky says his son is a troubled boy, and fears he will die in a “blaze of glory” in a confrontation with police.

Keith McLeod issued a statement yesterday saying his son is kind, caring, and considerate, and he is worried about what has happened.

The two teens were last seen in northern Manitoba, after evading police in BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
