A battle between neighbours has spilled into city hall, and forced council to strengthen bylaws about hedges.
A 30-foot cedar hedge is blocking sunlight at a Steede Avenue home, and the owners came looking for help.
Mayor Sharie Minions said the new rules restricting hedge heights should not cause alarm for people with well-manicured trees and shrubs as the enforcement process is complaint driven.
“The bylaws are already in place and you can’t have that size of a hedge,” said Minions. “The changes that we made were reasonably minor. It will continue to be minitored when there is an issue and bylaw will engage with property owners when there is an issue.”
Under the bylaws, front fences and hedges are restricted to 4′ high and back fences and hedges 6′ high.
Minions said the city cares what properties look like, and they will put the new hedge height bylaws to a vote at their next meeting.
