The city’s only registered heritage building is up for sale.
City Council asked staff to put together a request for proposals to sell the historic train station or lease it for 99-years.
While Twin City Brewing and an unnamed restaurantuer are interested in the 108-year old building, the station desperately needs a new roof and seismic upgrades, which the city is reluctant to pay for according to Mayor Sharie Minions.
“It’s another hertage asset of ours that we have not maintained to this point and it’s going to continue to cost us now going forward,” she said. “Some thing needs to be done with the building. It needs significant updates so it’s going to come down to whether the city is able to fund those updates and if not what are some other options to partner with the private sector on it.”
Minions said the city can put covenants on title to protect the heritage look of the building, and keep part of it as a working train station.
Staff will present the proposed RFP at the next meeting of council.
