The Minister of Jobs, Trade and Technology was in Port Alberni Friday, meeting with the Port Authority and Canadian Maritime Engineering.
Plans to build a drydock facility is moving forward, and Minister Bruce Ralston called the proposal “tantalizing”.
“I was very impressed with the proposal,” he said. “What I didn’t realize is that you can buy a second-hand drydock, you don’t have to build one from scratch, so you can get up and running fairly quickly.”
Last year, the Province put $50,000 towards a drydock feasibility study.
Canadian Maritime Engineering has committed $12 million to the floating dry dock project, expected to cost $48 million and create 100 jobs if approved.
