Members of the United Steelworkers are digging in for what could be a long strike against Western Forest Products.
The union says the company is enjoying record profits, and some of that should be shared with their workers.
99% of USW members voted in favour of a strike, demanding better pay and pensions from the company that has made $70 million profit off a billion dollars in revenue for the past two years in a row.
WFP says they’re willing to negotiate but the union walked away from the table.
Local union executive member Glen Cheetham said it’s because the company is asking for far too much
He said while there’s never a good time to strike, members decided this was a good time to push back against Western Forest Products demands.
Cheetham says of their 2000 members on strike, 400 of those are in the Alberni Valley.
