Region debates cannabis rules

The Alberni – Clayoquot Regional District continues to wrestle with cannabis regulations.

At a Committee of the Whole meeting yesterday, the Board of Directors and managers tried to hammer out zoning and licencing retail cannabis stores, and large production facilities.

Board Chair John Jack said while rural areas are reluctant to give up agricultural land to large scale cannabis production, cities work to protect their light industrial lands from commercial cannabis operations.

Beaver Creek director John McNabb said he’s never seen a system so screwed up at all levels of government.

Planning and Development Manager Mike Irg said the issue has taken a significant amount of staff time.

Jack said the ACRD has spent more than $70,000 in staff time the past two years plus thousands of hours in board time, dealing with cannabis regulations.

The board has asked to meet with the Alberni Valley Farmers Institute to hear their concerns about using agricultural land to produce pot.
