Money available for drag strip

A dedicated drag strip in Port Alberni is a possibility, after a similar project was sunk in Campbell River.

Alberni Valley Drag Racing member Roger Haggerty, said the Vancouver Island Motorsports Association has money to invest in a track somewhere on the Island, and they’re looking for political support

“There is an opportunity to build a racetrack on Vancouver Island, and there are people with a drive to get that project built,” he said. “Only one will be built on Vancouver Island, and maybe it can be built here in the Alberni Valley.”

Haggerty says it’s critical Alberni keeps it’s spot on the provincial drag racing calendar by hosting races or those dates will get snapped up by other communities.

The proposed 1/4 mile drag strip in Campbell River suffered a blowout before they got to the starting line after its projected $5 million cost to build swelled to $8 million with the cost of the land.

A dedicated purpose-built drag strip is the ultimate goal of Thunder in the Valley organizers and their many supporters, according to Haggerty.
