Compost program inches forward

The move towards a regional composting program took another step forward this week.
The Alberni Valley / Bamfield Services Committee heard from researchers that residents of the Alberni – Clayoquot Regional District have one of the highest rates of waste generation.
According to the 205-page report, we produce 778 kilograms of garbage per household, per year, compared to 350 kilograms in Nanaimo and an average of 450 kilograms for the province.
23% of our garbage is said to be compostable materials like kitchen scraps and yard and garden waste.
Local landfills are reaching the threshold where the province could order a multi-million dollar methane capture system be installed.
The issue will now go to the ACRD Board of Directors for debate and a decision.
