Mayor Minions studies forestry

Mayor Sharie Minions said she gained more insight into Port Alberni’s forest sector after her recent trip to the mainland.

She said a mayor’s meeting in Prince George focused on forestry in Northern BC, and then the Council of Forest Industry’s annual convention in Vancouver brought many of the issues into focus.

“The phrase that came up over and over was ‘high value not high production’ which I think is in line with a more sustainable, long-term forest industry,” she said.

While municipalities don’t control forest policy, she said local governments can be a significant force in lobbying for or against changes that affect the many forest-dependent communities in BC.
