The BC Government has embarked on a dramatic poverty reduction plan, rooted in the Alberni Valley.
With one of the highest rates of poverty in the country, and a child poverty rate far above the national average, the new plan called TogetherBC plans to help reduce overall poverty in the province by 25%, and cut child poverty in half, within the next five years.
Mid Island / Pacific Rim MLA Scott Fraser says the poverty studies done in Port Alberni helped the committee who developed the plan.
Fraser said the strategy is anchored by new initiatives including the revised child benefit programs and other actions that will increase household incomes.
