As sunny weather brought people out into their yards, backyard burning complaints spiked, which has kept valley fire departments hopping.
City of Port Alberni Deputy Fire Chief Wes Patterson said there is a community-led backyard burning bylaw in place to protect air quality, and only cooking fires with clean firewood is allowed, not the burning of dry leaves and yard waste.
Fire crews were called back this morning, after dousing a grassfire on Cameron Road yesterday afternoon.
The fire grew so quickly yesterday that Beaver Creek firefighters triggered the mutual aid call to Cherry Creek and Sproat Lake fire departments to assist.
Within city limits, there is a $200 fine for backyard burning.
