Commuters became heroes this morning after a frightening crash near the top of the hump.
Icy conditions are believed to have been a factor in a head-on crash between a pick-up truck and an SUV shortly before 7:30 this morning.
According to Port Alberni Fire Chief Mike Owen, the driver of the SUV, who was injured herself, rushed to help two other motorists free the male driver of the pick-up truck, as fire broke out in his vehicle.
“The driver of the SUV as well as the bystanders were absolutely the heroes in this situation,” said Owen. “If not for them the driver of the pick-up may not have survived the incident.”
The male driver was taken to hospital with a suspected broken arm, broken leg, and chest pains.
