The new Port Alberni shelter officially opened on Friday, with all levels of government in attendance to celebrate.
Called ‘Our Home on 8th’, the $7.4 million facility provides desperately needed short-term accommodation according to Shelter Society Executive Director Wes Hewitt.
“The design of the building is for 30 units upstairs, there’s 18 shelter beds plus a family unit that takes 6, and a wet weather unit for another 15,” he said.
Hewitt says they’ll be able to start welcoming people into the facility once the occupancy permit is completed this week.
He said the old shelter across the street will be turned into a 21-unit seniors housing complex.
