Medical Marijuana facility faces opposition

Dozens of Beaver Creek residents packed the Regional District meeting yesterday, protesting the planned construction of a medical marijuana production facility.

Carolyn Thibedeau presented a petition with more than 480 signatures, and said neighbours will not sit back and become collateral damage in the new cannabis gold rush.

The proponent Premium Cannabis Meds BC plans to build a 3-storey, $25-million production facility across the road from a treatment center.

They applied for their permits before the provincial government changed the rules about cement pad production facilities on agricultural land.

Beaver Creek regional director John McNabb says the board was handcuffed, and couldn’t legally side with the rural residents.

The plans now go to the provincial Agricultural Land Commission along with the petition and dozens of letters of opposition for a final decision.
