Budget cuts provide time to rebuild

City Councils decision to pull funding from the tourist trains has created a wave of controversy locally, and throughout the island.

Many have voiced disappointment that one of our main tourist attractions will not be here for this summers cruise ship visits, or anytime during 2019.

Industrial Heritage Society president Kevin Hunter said he was initially shocked by the decision, but has since found a silver lining.

“When you step back and look at the big picture, it gives us time to regroup and rebuild, and make it a much better product in 2020,” he said.

Hunter said they are halfway through the restoration of the #7 Baldwin steam locomotive, and will have to pursue $60,000 in government grants and private donations to complete it by the projected deadline in 2020.
