Drag racers want to return to the Alberni Valley Regional Airport.
A dozen race supporters asked the Alberni – Clayoquot Regional District Board of Directors to allow them to return, after the runway expansion project forced them to move 4 years ago.
Alberni Valley Drag Racing Association Director Roger Haggarty says while the street race on Stamp Avenue was adequate for the past few years, both racers and spectators are desperate to return to the island’s only 1/4 mile track.
Haggarty says their spectator revenue dropped by half when the event was moved to Stamp Ave, and they weren’t able to give as much money back to the service groups who help them.
Beaver Creek Director John McNabb, who has raced in the event, asked staff to develop a logistics report, and the issue go to the Alberni Valley Committee to develop recommendations for the board.
