Port Alberni’s new mayor and council were sworn in last night, and started to plot out their first months in office.
Mayor Sharie Minions gave her first annual address, and said while everyone on council has different visions for Port Alberni, they will start by focusing on commonalities.
She said past councils rushed to produce strategic plans, but she wants to take a more measured and thoughtful approach.
Minions did put her first stamp on her term last night, moving council meetings from 7 at night to 2 in the afternoon, starting in the new year.
She said afternoon meetings are far more productive, and there are more ways for people to watch city council meetings either on their tv or computer.
She said not many members of the public actually come out for council meetings, but they will keep committee of the whole meetings at 4 pm to encourage greater public participation.
Council chambers were overflowing last night with friends and family of mayor and council.
The meeting was kept short with only meeting dates and committee appointments being confirmed.
