One of the most powerful bureaucrats in Victoria is railing against Proportional Representation, saying it takes power away from smaller communities, and puts it in political back rooms in Victoria and Vancouver.
Bob Plecas says Proportional Representation would increase the size of the mid-island riding, once again moving political attentions to Nanaimo, and away from west coast communities.
Plecas, who served as a deputy minister under five different premiers across political boundaries, says we don’t have all the information, facts, or constituency maps and it’s not worth the risk.
He says we should not trade a stable, simple, successful system, for a complex confusing system.
Premier John Horgan is on record saying he supports changing the electoral system to proportional representation.
He said the first past the post system used today is outdated, and proportional representation would ensure every vote counts.
