After 40 years representing the rural area of Beaufort, Mike Kokura has retired from the Alberni – Clayoquot Regional District Board of Directors.
Kokura was first elected in 1972, and served as chair from 1979 to 1981, and said he’s seen a lot of changes over his 4 decades in office.
Kokura said in the past 4 decades they’ve brought better water services to Beaver Creek and Bamfield, improved fire protection in Beaver Creek and Sproat Lake, and taken over management of 2 airports.
Seven of the 13 directors were recognized for their service yesterday after announcing their retirement, or losing their elections.
Tony Bennett of Long Beach was thanked for his 19 years on the board, Ucluelet’s Diane St. Jacques with 13 years, Port Alberni’s Jack McLeman with six, along with single-term members Lucas Banton from Cherry Creek, Keith Wyton of Bamfield, and Port Alberni Mayor Mike Ruttan.
Kokura’s seat will be taken over by newly elected Beaufort Director Tanya Shannon.
