It’s fire safety week, and Port Alberni Firefighters will be spreading their message to schools and community groups.
Acting Fire Chief Wes Patterson says everyone should test their smoke detectors this week.
He said with cooler autumn weather upon us, many Port Alberni homeowners will be lighting up their woodstoves and fireplaces, and annual chimney cleanings are important to prevent chimney fires, which are one of a few common fire calls at this time of the year.
Patterson said people should be aware that 60% of all fires are cooking related, but they’ve also been called to a few dryer fires lately, so people need to make sure lint catches are cleaned, and remove fire hazards in every area of your home.
He said you should also look around every room in your house to make sure there are no fire hazards, and while you’re there figure out at least 2 ways out of that room in case of a fire.
With Halloween just around the corner, fire officials are reminding people that fireworks are not allowed within city limits, except with a permit from the firehall.
