Businesses on lower 3rd Avenue complaining about the effect of an overdose prevention site in their midst, have the support of Mayor Mike Ruttan.
He said the city was not consulted, and Island Health should have talked to possible neighbours and the people of Port Alberni.
“If it’s needed, it’s needed. If it’s making a difference, it’s making a difference,” said Ruttan. “But I don’t think it should be done at the expense of pre-existing businesses and pre-existing residences. That would be the case in any community, not just Port Alberni.”
Ruttan said the Overdose Prevention Site at Third and Bute has had a negative affect on neighbouring businesses and residents, and he would be interested in speaking with Island Health about other possible locations.
