City asks for Raw Log action

Port Alberni City Councillors are heading to Whistler next week for the annual Union of BC Municipalities meeting.

Mayor Mike Ruttan said they’ve joined with the Alberni – Clayoquot Regional District to speak out against raw log exports, and its effect on local mills

Ruttan says companies like Teal Jones and Catalyst have been blocking raw log shipments, arguing that the fibre is desperately needed for local mills.

He said the provincial government has been considering a forced reduction of raw log exports, and the city and regional district will try to get the UBCM to encourage the BC government towards action.

Ruttan and councillor Denis Sauve will not be going to the convention as they focus on their upcoming election campaigns.
