A 38-year old Port Alberni man alleged to be the head of a local gang, was released from jail yesterday.
David Daniel Bird pled guilty to the unlawful confinement of Lawrence Stubbs, and beating him between March 4th and June 30th of last year, after allegedly finding child pornography on Stubbs phone.
Bird is alleged to be a leader of the Wolfpack – a group of drug addicts who fuel their addiction by settling drug debts for dealers, threatening people to prevent them from talking to police, and beating those they believe to be pedophiles.
Bird along with 44-year old Anthony Almeida took Stubbs to Sarita Bay where they intended to kill him and dump his body in the ocean, but the victim pled for his life and Almeida backed out of the plan.
Bird has been in custody for 13 months, and at time and a half was given credit for 19 months and released on time served, since no one was willing to testify as a witness.
Almeida was recently released after 14 months time served but died of an overdose a few days after his release.
While 3 other alleged Wolfpack members have previously been sentenced and released from jail after similar cases, 3 others are still to be sentenced.
