Landowners along Grandview Road were surprised to learn the city is about to take away part of their properties for a gravel sidewalk.
The $100,000 project was listed as a priority at Monday’s city budget meeting, and will be built on the west side of the road with a deep culvert separating vehicles and pedestrians.
Mike Cahan said his acreage has been in his family for generations, and he’s not about to give up his property, or the thick hedgerow planted by his grandfather 60 years ago that would be mowed down for the path.
Cahan said neighbouring property owners are also opposed to the project and have not been approached by the the city.
He said there is no easement agreement with the city that would allow them to take the land, and he plans to fight to protect his family’s long-held acreage.
