Harbour Road users may face some delays over the coming months as the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation begins construction of it’s west coast operations base.
The Port Alberni spill-response base will include two sites located off of Harbour Road between Argyle Street and Bruce Street, and will include moorage off of the Water Street dock and an office and warehouse near the Port Authority’s office.
Michael Lowry says the first phase is the reconstruction of the Water Street dock
While the $150 million project is tied directly to the Kinder-Morgan pipeline expansion project, Lowry says they expect the base to be operational by the Spring of 2019.
Specialized spill response vessels are currently being built overseas for the west coast operations, which will eventually employ 20 people shared between Port Alberni and Ucluelet.
