Results from the 2016 census are in, and Port Alberni’s population dipped slightly, to 17,678 people in the city.
The average income is $25,600 and the average household income is $50,800
There was a significant increase in the percentage of First Nations people in the city as 17% of the population is Aboriginal – 19.5% throughout the Alberni – Clayoquot Regional District.
Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde says the statistics are a compelling reminder that a young and booming Aboriginal population must be given hope and opportunity and supported through significant, sustained investments in their future.
There were also a thousand people who identified as visible minorities in Port Alberni, with half being south asian.
