People sparked a pair of fires in 12 hour period

Firefighters are mopping up after a forest fire in the Roger Creek gulley behind the fall fair grounds this morning.

City of Port Alberni firefighters along with members of the Thunderbird Forest Fire Fighting unit crew responded to the brush fire behind the multiplex which quickly grew to an acre in size

Port Alberni fire chief Kelly Gilday says it took a couple of hours to put the fire out, but they’re still hosing down hotspots

The Roger Creek fire was the second in 12 hours as yesterday afternoon crews were called out to extinguish a brush fire on Franklin River Road

Both fires are believed to be human caused and are being investigated by police for possible criminal charges.

Gilday is disappointed that some people just aren’t getting the message about the extreme fire danger.
