Fisheries and Oceans Canada has almost doubled their initial estimate of the sockeye run, which they now believe is around 300,000 fish.
As a result they have increased the sports fishing limit to 4 fish per day in the inlet starting Saturday, and will open parts of the river with varying limits as well.
According to Salmon and Herring Resource Manager Peter Hall, there is still considerable uncertainty about the run timing as well as the lack of 4-year old fish, so they’re still being careful about how much fishing pressure they allow.
More than 209,000 sockeye have made it through the counters, and 21,000 were landed after fishing was opened this past Saturday.
