The latest test fishery has shown there are more Somass River Sockeye than first estimated.
Tseshaht Fisheries Manager Andy Olson said the estimate has increased by 40,000 to 210,000 fish.
As a result, there will be a First Nations food fishery this weekend, and recreational anglers will be allowed 2 fish per day past Polly’s Point as of Saturday.
Olson said while the main run of 4-year old fish still haven’t shown in any great numbers, larger 5 and 6 year old fish have biologists breathing a sigh of relief.
Olson said commercial gillnetters will also get an opening on Tuesday, and there may be more opportunities after further testing this weekend.
