A frightening fire call yesterday as local crews were dispatched to Cathedral Grove around 2:30 in the afternoon.
A pickup truck had gone off the road and hit a tree, and then caught fire.
Port Alberni Fire Department Captain Ed Francouer said they got to the crash site quickly and were able to protect the popular park.
The Coastal Fire Centre sent a helicopter to make sure the fire didn’t extend up the old growth trees.
The driver of the truck suffered a minor injury to his hand and was taken to West Coast General Hospital as a precaution.
Highway 4 was closed for 2 hours and traffic was backed up to the top of the hump.
