Repeat offenders continue to plague Port Alberni RCMP and some blame is being put on the courts.
On Friday morning police were called as a man stole a car at 4th and Burde.
A witness followed the vehicle at a distance, calling in updates to police.
The suspect realized he was being followed and abandoned the vehicle near 10th and Bute, but police quickly collared him a block away.
Inspector Brian Hunter said the suspect is a 36 year old male with an extensive criminal record, and appears to have arrived in Port Alberni from Nanaimo recently.
He had been arrested by Port Alberni RCMP exactly a week earlier for breach of probation, and sentenced to 3 days in jail.
William Barr faces a charge of theft of vehicle and two counts of breach of probation and will be in court this morning.
Police are asking the court to ban him from being in Port Alberni.
