After 4 months of Freedom of Information requests, denials and appeals, Island Health has finally released a few details surrounding the alleged theft of drugs from West Coast General Hospital.
The incident is believed to have happened in the med-surg ward during the first week of January 2017, and resulted in a new system where any narcotic has to be signed out by two nurses.
Much of the 70 pages of records were severely redacted, saying disclosure could be harmful to personal privacy and law enforcement, even though there has not been a police investigation.
Sources within the hospital have alleged one nurse was officially suspended for the missing doses of hydromorphone, which is said to be five times more powerful than morphine.
