Sproat Lake residents are celebrating after Catalyst Paper agreed to assist with flood mitigation this winter.
Catalysts’s communications director Eduarda Higgins said the company responded to community concerns and removed one of the large steel plates from their Sproat Lake Weir, allowing more water out of the lake during the rainy season.
Higgins said they worked closely with the ACRD and consulted with downstream property owners, and will put the plate back into the weir in the Spring as the weir is critical to the operation of the Port Alberni Mill, especially in the dry season.
