Courtenay – Alberni MP Gord Johns is celebrating the election of his new leader.
Jagmeet Singh was chosen leader of the federal New Democrats on Sunday on the first ballot of the leadership race.
Johns said the Ontario member of provincial parliament will now travel the country to gain support before seeking election to the House of Commons.
Singh hasn’t yet publicly decided whether he will try to seek a seat in the House of Commons between now and the 2019 federal election.
Johns said Singh can take the party – and politics – in a new direction and he’s proud that the first non-white leader of a major political party in Canada is a New Democrat.
