An attempted gas theft almost caused an environmental emergency this morning, after someone punctured the gas tank of a parked pickup truck, spilling gasoline across the Fisherman’s Harbour parking lot.
Firefighters along with police and city works crews were called out just before 7 this morning and scrambled to prevent the gas from getting into the sewer pipes, according to Fire Captain Randy Thoen.
Thoen said if gas had gotten into the storm drain there would be concerns of a possible explosion and environmental issues.
Police say there has been a troubling spike in gas thefts recently, where the perpetrator pokes a hole in gas tanks and drains the fuel into a bucket.
