Island Health is refusing to comment on an alleged theft of potent drugs from West Coast General Hospital.
The theft of hydromorphone – a drug said to be five times more powerful than morphine – is alleged to have occurred late last year.
At least one person is said to have been suspended for their role in the alleged theft, which is still under investigation.
Island Health recently admitted they changed how drugs are dispensed at West Coast General due to security issues, shifting from a double locked door, to a two-person sign out system.
While Island Health refused to admit to the issue, our investigation was proven through multiple Freedom of Information requests and appeals over the past 8 months.
Last September, FOI requests from a freelance journalist uncovered the disappearance of a large quantity of fentanyl from Royal Jubilee Hospital in 2015.
