A small forest fire that broke out on the north side of Great Central Lake on Friday afternoon is now out.
The blaze near the base of Thunder Mountain was a third of a hectare, and was quickly contained by 13 firefighters, a helicopter, and two air tankers that hit the fire shortly after it was first spotted.
Fire Information Officer Jessica Poustie said there is currently no smoke or fire, and firefighters are patrolling the area to confirm the fire is out.
The only other fire on the island is the Kaikash Creek fire near Port McNeill, which Poustie says is all but out except for one spot firefighters can’t get to, and they’re letting that small area burn itself out.
No cause is known on either fire, and they’re both under investigation.
