A special meeting was called yesterday by Alberni Clayoquot Regional District staff after they realized they were heading towards serious cost overruns on the $6 million airport runway expansion project.
Manager of Environmental Services Andrew McGifford and Finance Manager Terri Fong outlined the issues for Board members on the anticipated $535,000 cost overrun
A forest access road that borders the new runway has to be taken down by more than 4 feet so passing vehicles won’t interfere with planes.
Board members agreed to take the money from the Capital Reserve Fund, and put some projects on hold that were dependant on money from that $800,000 account.
Work on the road will begin next week with a planned completion in September.
